WHERE IT ALL BEGAN:
My parents gave me a ukulele when I was eight. Soon, I graduated to a six-string acoustic guitar, then on to a lifelong love of instrumental guitar music. My Dad -- always there to encourage my music -- made a deal with me: If I could learn how to play "Mister Sandman", Chet Atkins style, he would buy me that orange Gretsch guitar I'd been drooling over. You've never seen a kid work so hard at learning a song! Well, I learned it. He bought it. And to this day, Mister Sandman is still one of the most requested songs on my set list. My first pro job: playing lead in a rock band, back when the Golden Oldies were in their infancy, too! Being self-taught, I don't read music, don't understand music theory, barely know the names of the strings. But here I am decades later, still at it, still loving it... |
